Should homemakers turn entrepreneurs?

Till just a few years ago, ‘working’ meant being employed, with the Government, school or a corporate. Opportunities to start up a business on one’s own were limited, to say the least. Given the demands of a job and the needs of the family, it was no wonder that a large number of women preferred to or were forced to turn homemakers. Not so anymore.

While being a homemaker is a demanding as well as fulfilling ‘occupation’, today’s woman is not content with being confined to the four walls of her house and playing the role of a wife, a mother or a daughter-in-law. Nor should she be.

Being an entrepreneur offers women the opportunity to make use of their unique skills and knowledge, to work at their own pace and to be financially independent. Entrepreneurship develops one’s confidence as one faces the myriad challenges that each day brings.

Women have an inherent advantage when being an entrepreneur – they are born managers. The ability to juggle multiple roles at the same time makes them uniquely suited to manage a business prudently and efficiently.

Today’s environment is truly conducive for turning an entrepreneur. The Government is supporting entrepreneurs by offering various schemes, especially to women entrepreneurs. There is an entire ecosystem consisting of mentors, advisors, financiers, angel investors and so on, who are ready to support a robust business idea.

Today, technology has made it possible to turn virtually ANY skill or idea into a lucrative business. Technology is also making it easier and cheaper to advertise the product / service, to reach the customers, to deliver the goods and to get their feedback.

So, what’s stopping you, Girl? “…..Throw off the bowlines. Sail away from safe harbor. Catch the wind in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover!”
